Why study in the USA

A system built around choice

U.S. undergraduate education works differently from India. Here is what families most often ask about.

  • Flexible curriculum

Many universities let you explore courses before declaring a major, and some allow minors or double majors.

  • Many kinds of institutions

Public universities, private universities, and liberal arts colleges differ in size, setting, and cost.

  • Hands-on learning

Research, labs, and internship opportunities vary by university and program, so check each one.

  • Practical training

Eligible F-1 students may apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Official rules apply and can change.

Costs & scholarships

Understand costs and scholarships

Tuition is only part of the picture. Plan for the full cost of attendance across all four years.

What a year typically includes

  • Tuition & fees
  • Housing
  • Food / meal plan
  • Health insurance
  • Books & supplies
  • Travel & personal

Your Form I-20 shows the total amount you must document. Costs usually rise each year and exchange rates change.

Where funding can come from

  • Merit scholarships. Awarded for academic or extracurricular achievement. Often partial and highly competitive.
  • Need-based aid. Based on family finances. Availability for international students is limited at many universities.
  • Departmental awards. Offered by specific programs, sometimes after the first year of study.
  • External scholarships. From foundations, trusts, and organisations in India or abroad.

Scholarships are limited and competitive. UGinUS never promises or guarantees funding.
