Understanding the F-1 student visa
A plain-language overview of the process. Visa rules and fees change, so always follow the official U.S. government websites linked here.
The F-1 process, step by step
- 1
Get admitted to a SEVP-certified school
Only SEVP-certified institutions can issue a Form I-20 for F-1 students.
- 2
Receive your Form I-20
Issued by the university after you accept admission and provide proof of funding. Check every detail for accuracy.
- 3
Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee
Pay through the official Department of Homeland Security website and keep your receipt.
- 4
Complete the DS-160
The online nonimmigrant visa application on the U.S. Department of State website.
- 5
Schedule your appointments
Book biometrics and interview appointments through the official U.S. visa appointment system for India.
- 6
Attend the visa interview
Bring your passport, I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, and supporting academic and financial documents.
Documents to prepare
Core documents
Valid passport, Form I-20, DS-160 confirmation page, SEVIS fee receipt, and appointment confirmation.
Supporting documents
Academic records, test scores, admission letter, and financial evidence matching your I-20.
Preparing for the interview
Be ready to explain, clearly and honestly, why you chose your university and program, how you will fund your studies, and your plans after graduation. Answer in your own words — memorised answers rarely help.
